What is a pre-existing condition?

Independence Blue Cross and Capital Blue Cross considers a pre-existing condition a medical condition or illness for which medical advice or treatment was recommended by or received from a doctor within a five-year period preceding the effective date of coverage. Blue Shield considers a pre-existing condition as a medical condition or illness for which medical advice or treatment was recommended or received from a doctor within the past year. Most of our plans through the Association cover pre-existing conditions.
